How to craft a resume that makes the shortlist
Recruiters usually scan a resume quickly before a detailed read-through. Make key parts easy to spot, and support your claims with facts.
1. Contact details
Start with your full name at the top, followed by a line with your city, phone number, and an email address you check daily. Use a simple email based on your name, not a nickname. Add a LinkedIn or portfolio link only if current. There's no need for your home address, birth date, father's name, or marital status.
2. Summary
Write two or three lines about who you are, what you are good at, and the job you want. Include the role name and one or two skills from the job post. Freshers can note their degree and a project or internship; experienced people should start with years of experience and one result. Skip overused phrases like “hard-working team player” that appear on every resume.
3. Work experience, highlighted with numbers
List jobs and internships with the most recent first: job title, employer, city, and dates. For each, add two to five points beginning with a verb that show a result, such as “Handled 60 customer calls daily,” “Reduced stock errors by 15%,” or “Trained 4 new team members.” Numbers make claims more credible and easy to notice when skimming.
4. Education
Start with your highest education: degree, college, years, and your score (CGPA or percentage). Freshers can add Class XII and Class X; after a few years of work, the degree alone is fine. Still studying? Note the expected completion year, like “2026 (expected).”
5. Skills
List the tools and skills needed for the role that you are truly proficient in, such as Tally, Excel, SQL, or spoken English. Use the exact terms from the job ad where applicable, because recruiters and ATS software search for them. Exclude anything you can't confidently discuss in an interview.
6. Projects for freshers
If you have little or no work experience, projects are key. List college and final-year projects, freelance, or volunteer work: describe what you created or did, the tools you used, and the outcome. Include a link to the work (GitHub, a portfolio, or a live site) if available.

Create an ATS-friendly resume
Many employers and job portals use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to process applications and read your resume text. Follow these rules to maintain readability:
- Stick to a single column with plain text. Tables, text boxes, photos, icons, and skill bars can confuse the software. Every resume from this builder follows this approach.
- Use standard headings like Experience, Education, and Skills, so the software can identify where each section begins.
- Include the job post's exact words for skills and job titles when they truthfully apply to you.
- Send a PDF generated from text, like the ones from this builder, or a Word document. A scan or photo of a printed resume cannot be processed.
- Ensure dates are formatted consistently throughout, such as “Jun 2023 – Present”.
- Place your name and contact information in the main body of the document, not in a header or footer.
